Abbie has cerebral palsy
Cerebral palsy is a condition that affects muscle control and movement,
This was caused by starvation of oxygen to the brain during pregnancy/ birth resulting in permanent brain damage thus damaging Abbie’s motor nerve cells,
Therefore the brain cannot work effectively as communication between the brain and movement is hindered,
This is a non-degenerative condition, i.e she will not get any worse, but equally she will not get any better.
How this affects Abbie:
The right hand side of her body is most affected,
Her muscle tone is tense and weak,
Gross motor skills delayed, (the ability to move in a co-ordinated, purposeful and controlled way),
Delayed learning skills,
Walks on her tip toes due to muscle tension,
Needs life long physiotherapy..and that’s just the physical difficulties.
That’s just the physical difficulties…
There is ground breaking surgery available only in America, which enables the patient to be able to walk on the soles of their feet.
It was feared Elodie Wilton would have to stand on tiptoes for the rest of her life after she was diagnosed with a form of cerebral palsy.
But after groundbreaking surgery, she can now walk on the soles of her feet.
Her mum Cath, 33, and dad Rhys, 34, were devastated when she was diagnosed with a form of cerebral palsy that affects the legs last October.

They raised £57,000 - and the op in July was a success. "It's like miracle surgery," says Cath. "Her feet are flat, her legs have straightened out and with physio we can now strengthen the leg muscles."
